Create Unique Tie Dye Prints with Ice Dyeing!

What is ice dyeing?

Ice dyeing is an easy and satisfying way to dye clothing or fabric using ice and fiber reactive dye powder. You mound the ice on the fabric and then sprinkle the dye over it. As the ice melts, it pulls the dye down through the fabric, creating beautiful patterns and gradations. What makes this process so special is the way the dye "breaks" or splits as it comes into contact with the ice.

Plain tie-dye is so last summer, this year beat the heat with ice dying. This new spin on a DIY classic uses all the same supplies as traditional tie-dye PLUS ice.
Today we are sharing one of our favorite tie dye methods with this DIY Muted Ice Dye Sweatshirt! We've done a bit of ice dye on this blog before.
I tried it for the first time last week and now it’s become my new favourite thing EVER. What I loved the most about ice dying is that unlike the traditional tie-dye method (tie & bind), it lets you achieve a stunning watercolour look. The process is so fun and easy and best of all, the ice does all the work for you so you don’t have to have any prior experience with fabric dying to create something
gorgeous.
While you may be tempted to experiment with a variety of colours, I'd also encourage you to try single colours - since the dye breaks, with multiple dyes you may end up creating something a lot more multicolored than you have in mind. To give you an idea of the range of effects from a single dye, I tested a bunch from my collection. Here are my results:
Ice dye is simply another tie dye pattern! You really don’t need a ton of stuff to start ice dyeing! If you already do regular tie dyeing, you should already have everything you need.
